You're here because you know there's so much more to writing than just putting words on a page.
You hear the music of language when you read. You get why Tolkien would say the words “cellar door” have the most beautiful sound in the English language. When you watch a movie or a TV show, you see the artistry behind the scenes…even if no one else notices. You see a writer as a master craftsman — someone who knows and loves their material and their tools with a passion that borders on obsession.
I get it…because that’s who I am too.
I created The Story Scene to be a style blog for writers.
This is a place to share our love for the art of wordsmithing and story craft. It’s a place to honor what we do as writers…and it’s a place to hone our own skills so that we can put our best work out into the world.
I’m so excited you’re here, and I can’t wait to share this celebration of all that’s bold, beautiful, and brilliant in the world of writing.
So whether you’re a novice or on your way to mastery, welcome!
A Bit About Me...
I started out as a novelist, but I’ve always dreamed about writing for Hollywood. In 2016, I decided I was done waiting for the stars to fall in my lap.
I found a screenwriting contest, entered, and won. It was as crazy amazing as that.
They flew me out to Hollywood, and I made a guest appearance on Pilar Alessadra’s On the Page podcast (listen to that episode here), met with several managers, and dipped my toes in the Pacific Ocean. Two weeks after I came back to Dallas, I signed with my manager and I’ve never looked back.
I’m building a working writing career in L.A. and currently have a script under consideration at a major production company. But I’m a Dallas girl at heart and Austin’s in my backyard. I’ve got a fierce indie entrepreneurial streak, and I formed my own company, Areion Media, in 2018.
I’ve got a Ph.D in medieval literature and teaching is my second passion — so currently that means I teach literature to college freshmen. So when I’m not penning sci-fi and historical fiction novels and screenplays, I’m teaching Homer and Dante and lyric poetry.
Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching dozens of new and emerging writers through the process of getting their best work on the page. One of the greatest joys of my life is working with writers one-on-one and getting to share in their passion for their stories.
When I’m not writing, teaching, coaching, or reading, you’ll probably find me running, practicing yoga, or binge-watching the BBC’s The Musketeers on Hulu.
